Where/When Do I Get Rid of My Garbage?

Lessons Learned on the importance of knowing where and when you can rid yourself of garbage collected when you were camping.

Imagine this: you've reached your campsite and you're starting to build up quite a bit of garbage at your site. Whether you're storing your garbage in plastic bags, paper bags or some other method, you'll want to find a way to rid yourself of your garbage so you can continue to enjoy your camping activities.

No need to worry, most campgrounds provide methods to dispose of your garbage either while you're at your campsite, or when you're leaving the campground. Below are a few of the standard ways to dispose of your garbage at most campgrounds. There are normally only two (2) options available to you at the campground itself.

Garbage Disposal At A Campground

Option #1: Dropping your garbage at the onsite garbage location - most campgrounds have a location where they have dumpsters for campsite disposal. You're responsible for taking your garbage bags to this location and dropping in the dumpster whenever needed. These locations are typically accessible 24/7, we have seen sites where their dumpsters are locked during times when their main office is not open. Usually to prevent unwanted dumping by outsiders on their sites. Normally, all your garbage is placed in one single bin and their is no provisions for separation of recycled materials or other garbage.

Option #2: Curbside garbage pickup - at some campgrounds, their maintenance teams will provide daily pickup of your garbage as long as it is bagged and placed in the appropriate locations by your campsite for pickup. In some cases, they may require you do place your garbage in one bag and your recycled garbage in another.

Option #3: Take your garbage with you - in cases where garbage disposal is not available, like in cases where you may be off the grid, or the campground does not provide garbage services, you many be required to take your garbage with you for disposal. This can be especially challenging when on extended off grid trips, so plan ahead accordingly.

There may be other options available to you and we would love to hear any comments or feedback and pass this along to the RV community.
